Keys to Substituting Cilantro in Guac

Keys to Substituting Cilantro in Guac

Turn to the “King of All Dips” for Super Bowl Sunday

It’s Super Bowl Sunday and it’s your turn to host the much-anticipated game day bash. You made sure to go the extra mile and prepare an array of snacks for all your friends. The spread is looking nice — wings, pizza, pigs in a blanket, baked potatoes, and the most important addition of all: dips. Everyone’s favorite dip is a personal choice; however, it wouldn’t be a party without guacamole. It’s a relatively healthy dish that can be enjoyed by everyone. It’s also a great source of vitamins and minerals, and is low in calories. Best part of all? It may be one of the easiest snacks to prepare and we happen to have a few tricks up our sleeve to elevate it.

When Guac Gets Flagged for a Penalty

If there’s anything that can stop the enjoyment of guac in a hurry, it’s cilantro 🤢 (but not for everyone). Although cilantro is popular in guacamole, many people find that it leaves a soap-like taste in their mouths. This year, be inclusive and ditch the cilantro — substitute it for something that can even add flavor. Cumin, crushed red pepper, parsley, and salt and pepper go a long way and we happen to have them all available for purchase.

Use ground cumin if you want the flavor to evenly disperse throughout the guacamole. It’s a great addition that tastes rich, hearty, and earthy with an edge of citrus. If your guests love the spicy, add in a few dashes of crushed red pepper to amplify the heat.

While many people find cilantro tasting like soap, try substituting it for parsley. These two green herbs may look like twins; however, they offer different flavors and are used differently when experimenting in the kitchen. Parsley is more versatile, while cilantro brings a strong herbaceous, citrus flavoring.

Please Everyone’s Palate

Wow the crowd this year by simply mashing avocado, lime juice, tomato, onion, and seasoning it with salt and pepper, cumin, and crushed red pepper. Be prepared for your bowl of guacamole to be polished off in just a few minutes.
